Days?: Dali

Dali is a small-ish hippie town in the mountains of Yunnan. It has an impressive ancient wall bordering the old town and walking streets a la Pearl St.

When we visited, there were a number of Chinese tourists, but our hostel was primarily filled with Westerners. We comiserated on China travel with two young men from London and talked Chinese development and politics with a Canadian and his son.

It felt like a miracle to be out of a megacity. We stayed for two nights before heading to Shangri-la. We saw some pagodas and temples and drank an expensive pot of pu'er tea.

Three pagodas built in the 800s.
